I Started a Musical Hobby During Rehab

When I went to rehab, I never would have guessed that I would have come out with a musical hobby. I liked music and all, but wasn’t good at it. It took me needing something to pour my time into in order for me to really start even considering it as a hobby. At the urging of my addiction counselor, I gave a few different instruments a try. After a very short time, I found a bit of a passion for guitar that I never even knew I had inside me.

My Musical Hobby Has Inspired Me Well Beyond Rehab

After a few times of messing around with a few of the different instruments at my rehab, I started to notice that I kept going back to the guitar. I kept strumming my fingers across the strings, and liking how it sounded, even when that was all I was capable of. I have now taken my musical hobby much further, but I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish that had it not been for being at rehab in the first place.

When I was growing up, I’d played a few different instruments, but none of them turned out so well. I tried really hard, and practiced a lot, but I was a slow learner, which put me behind my peers in class and caused me to get picked on. Because of that picking, I gave up the hobby a long time ago. It was kind of odd to pick it back up again, and in rehab of all places. It helped to keep my mind centered, and it helped me have something to give my attention to when things were a little chaotic in my life.

After I left rehab, my musical hobby kept me grounded and gave me an outlet when I got stressed. The funny thing is, I was playing by a window one day and got some attention from some people passing by. Now I get to play in a local band at fairs around the county, and it’s a great pastime. I never would have guessed that I would have wound up with anything like the opportunities I have been given since leaving rehab, but I am grateful. It’s taken me a little bit of time, but I have kept practicing and I am now able to teach myself new songs, all thanks to picking up a quick little hobby.
