Having Support Can Boost Relapse Prevention Efforts

Even the best relapse prevention efforts are going to leave a few gaps that you are going to have to remedy on your own. One of the best ways to fill in those gaps is to have a full support system around you. Ideally, you want support before you go to rehab, while you are there, and even more of it when you go home from rehab. If you can’t find the right type of support for all of those circumstances, then you need as much support as possible both during and after rehab.

Boosting Your Relapse Prevention Efforts

Surrounding yourself with the love, faith, and support of others is going to really up your relapse prevention efforts. You need people who are going to be your cheerleader, but also be your warden. Think of it this way. You need people who will be there for you and be proud of you taking the step to go to rehab. You also need people who are not going to be so impressed with that effort that they let you fall back into old habits. This is a good thing. You need people that will hold you accountable, even if you don’t like it in that moment.

When you have relapse on the mind, you can easily struggle with someone that is telling you not to make that mistake. Even though there is a part of you that wants to just give in, in that moment, you also know, deep down that you don’t want to go back down that road. Those support people need to know that you may have moments of weakness, and they still need to be there to police you if you do.

Have one or two people to call under any circumstance. You want them to be there for you, no matter what is going on. Make sure they know what role you are expecting them to play, and if they are to drop everything to be at your side. If you have expectations they never knew, that they don’t fulfil because they didn’t know, it’s leaving you open to a relapse. Being clear with your support system is one of the most important ways of boosting your relapse prevention efforts. It’s not easy, but it does get easier. All you have to do is take one moment at a time and keep moving forward. Slow progress is still progress!
