The best way to prepare for life after rehab is going to be to start while you are in rehab. You have the most help there. Talk to your counselors about what pitfalls most people face after leaving rehab, and see what suggestions they have for you. It may sound odd, since you are talking to a sober person about what an addict may face, but there are a couple things you need to keep in mind. One, they see addiction day in and day out, so they have a lot of knowledge and experience. Plus, quite a few people who currently work in rehabs, are recovered addicts themselves, so they know what your life will likely be like.
Life After Rehab Can Be as Good As You Make It
There are quite a few different ways of saying it, but the old saying goes something like “whatever you believe will be true”. That basically means that if you believe that life after rehab is going to be miserable, it will be true. If you believe that life after rehab will be full of opportunities, it will be true. You will look for reasons to make your beliefs true, no matter what those beliefs are. You could have two good things happen and two bad, but you will only see the good if you are looking for them, and the same goes with the bad.
Instead of deciding what life after rehab is going to be and waiting for that to come true, prepare to make it what you want. Make choices that are going to leave you as successful as possible, both at staying sober, and at life in general. Here are a few preparations you should seriously consider before heading home from rehab:
- Make sure you are living with someone that can and will support your sobriety.
- Make sure you have a job lined up, even if it’s working from home doing freelance work.
- Make sure you have a relapse prevention plan in place so you know what to do if ever tempted to relapse.
- Make sure you know where and when all of the local meetings are so you can keep in contact with people who can help your success after rehab.
- Make sure you don’t sell yourself short simply because you faced an addiction.
You are equally as capable, if not more so, because you overcame an addiction, as everyone else out there. So take life by the horns, and make it what you want it to be!
