Understanding Mental Health and Poverty Mental health conditions in the United States affect a significant number of people and are especially found among those individuals with low incomes. Mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, personality disorder, and substance use disorder (SUD) are all mental health conditions.
