When Fighting An Addiction, Know You Are Not Alone

One of the hardest things to keep in mind just before you go into rehab, or when you first begin, is that you are not alone. You feel totally isolated, and like no one cares, but that is not true. Those complete strangers you are surrounding yourself with in rehab care more about you than you may realize. They know what you are going through, as many of them have gone through it themselves, but they are there for you, even if you can’t see it yet.

How to Realize You Are Not Alone

The best way to realize that you are not alone is to actually take a look around. You will see people interacting with each other that do not have to. Yes, they are often paid for their choice of career, but that’s just it – it is their CHOICE of career. They want to be there. They’re not there because they got stuck there or drew the short straw in the drawing. Nope. They are there because they want to be. They want to help. Some of them are recovered addicts themselves, while others are family of recovered addicts. They love someone, like you, who needs help, or needed help at one point in time or another.

You are likely surrounded by at least one person who chose that career because they lost someone to an addiction that they could not help with. That impact caused them to make the choice to choose to help anyone else they could, like you. They choose to be the ones to ensure you are not alone, and they are experienced and willing to help. You just have to be the one to take them up on that offer. You are there for a reason, so don’t isolate yourself feeling alone, because that is not going to help you get better, nor is it going to help you feeling alone.

Addiction is a miserable condition that leaves you alone, feeling absolutely awful about yourself, in most circumstances. However, rehab is the first time where you can step out of that shadow and finally see that you are not alone because of the positive choice you are making to leave addiction behind. You are doing a great job by seeking addiction help, so don’t let a moment or two of feeling lonely stop you from taking that step out from the shadows and into the light.
