In Rehab, You Must Learn to Control Your Frustration

Learning how to control your frustration is one thing that nearly everyone has to do while in rehab. If you don’t, you will end up causing waves. Typically, those who cannot learn to control the frustrating things in their lives end up facing a relapse. The best way to be able to avoid relapsing is to take each of the tools that you get while in rehab, and put them to use when you get home.

To Control Your Frustration is to Take Control Over Your Life

It may not seem like any big deal to control your frustration, but when you are struggling with the overwhelming emotional burden that getting over an addiction becomes, it can mean the difference between making it and relapsing. Frustration can quickly get the better of you, so you need to be able to keep it at arm’s length in order to survive. Here are a few helpful ways to help you control your frustration:

  • Talk about what’s bothering you. Simply getting out whatever is on your mind can relieve the burden that too much frustration can pose.
  • Look at the bigger picture. Just because today you are frustrated and struggling to keep it together, doesn’t mean that you haven’t come a really far way in your overall journey. Keep track of how far you’ve come in terms of your overall goals.
  • Get outside. Simply going for a walk or taking the time to swim can give you a gentle way of being able to get yourself under control. When a situation seems out of control, fresh air and moving around can help you get things under control.
  • Accept your part, but nothing more. Frustration can come in many forms, but when you are frustrated over being a part of something that was only partly your fault (or none of your fault), then you need to accept that. Don’t accept the blame for someone else’s mistakes. Let them do the same.
  • Be around good company. The more positive the people around you are able to be, the more positive you are apt to be as well. This can help you control your frustration and get your mind back in a positive spot.

There are many ways to control your frustration. The more you are able to remain in control, the less likely you are to face a relapse in the future, and wind up back in rehab.
